God is doing something huge in Haiti, and we are going to be part of it! There are 54 orphans in the village of Susaub, Haiti who are without a home. We want to build them a home.

This girl is not Rebecca, who first had the vision to build an orphanage in Susaub. This is one of the orphans for whom we want to build this home. Her name is Jessi, and she doesn't have a place to sleep tonight.

Rebecca’s Hope is the orphanage we want to build. Rebecca had a vision to build this home for the orphans in her hometown of Susaub, so she moved to Port-au-Prince in order to work and send money back so that the orphanage could be built. Tragically, Rebecca lost her life in the 2010 Haiti earthquake and never lived to see her dream become a reality.

We want to help Rebecca’s memory live on by fulfilling this dream. God is going to do this, and he’s letting us be a part of it!

This is why on October 1st, we are starting a campaign to raise $30,000 in 30 days. You can keep up with our campaign at www.30kin30days.org.

Here’s what you can do:

1. Pray. Ask God how much he wants you to give to build a home for these 54 orphans. Ask God how you can tell others about the orphans in Susaub.

2. Go to the Facebook page for Rebecca’s Hope here and click “like.” Here, you can keep up with the orphanage and how everything is progressing.

3. Starting October 1st, give. You will be able to give online at www.30kin30days.org. None of this money is going to our church. None of it is even going to Pastor Salomon’s church in Susaub, which will be our “base” for building this orphanage. 100% of what you give will go to providing a home for these Haitian orphans.

4. Tell others!

Will you help give Jessi and her friends a home?

Our team leaves today (August 9th) for Haiti!

God says that “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.” At Journey Church, we believe that, so we’re sending a team to Haiti to minister to orphans there.

Come out to Chick-Fil-A on Veterans at 4:00 PM tonight for dinner and prayer with/for the team. They will leave at 5:00.

The team consists of: Jeff Jackson, Bart Jones, Pete Wilkinson, Drew Layman (the videographer) and Jim Downey (a NAMB church planting strategist).

Pastor Salomon (far right) and his church

The team will spend the night in Miami and land in Port-au-Prince Wednesday morning at about 9:30. They will get supplies there before heading to Sousaub.

It’s important to remember that we aren’t merely building an orphanage; we’re working with Pastor Salomon. By working with him and building this orphanage, we are meeting both physical and spiritual needs.

The main gols of this trip are:

To capture the story of the Haitian orphans on video

To build relationships with Pastor Salomon & his church

To establish plans to build the orphanage

To minister to the orphans and to Haitians in general

To scout out a clean water project

So, here is how to pray for our team. Pray that

They can find contractors, come up with a budget and plan effectively for the orphanage

They will be able to take good video footage in order to tell the story of Pastor Salomon and cast a vision for this ministry

Pastor Salomon and his family

Haiti just had a tropical storm go through, so pray that there will be minimum problems in its aftermath

The wives and children who will stay behind while their husbands and daddies are gone for a week

People will come to know Jesus through this ministry

Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ -Matthew 25:37-40

Here is a summary of Pastor Pete’s message a few weeks ago on witnessing to your co-workers.

1. We must be intentional–every day must be a mission.

Pray for your co-workers, ask God to give you opportunities to share the gospel with them, and look for these opporunities throughout the day.

2. We must be in the world, but not of the world.

Find time to hang out with non-Christians, doing everyday things like boating, fishing, playng a sport, lunch, dinner, cook-outs–you name it. Also, treat them to things. Take them out to dinner or a baseball game. Most people won’t turn down something free.

3. We must use bridges to the gospel.

Ask things like “did you go to church growing up?” “What does it take to get to heaven?” “How can I pray for you?” “If you were to die tonight, would you go to heaven? Why or why not?” Say “I know we’ve been friends for a while, but there’s something very important about my life I’d like to tell you, may I?”

So, what do you say?

Give your testimony–tell how Jesus saved you. The Bible also has a big-picture storyline-Creation, Fall, Redemption, Consummation. You can use this to tell others about their need for Jesus.

The “Romans Road” is also helpful.

Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God.”

Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Romans 10:9-10 “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

In conclusion, if Jesus has saved you, then you already know how to be saved! So, you can start with what you know. Always be looking for other ways to share the gospel with people, so that you can adapt your witnessing to different situations.

The Gospel isn’t just for Sunday mornings.

In fact, Jesus said that if we want to follow him, we should deny ourselves and take up our cross daily to do so. That means that we should always–every day–be intentional about the message of the salvation we have in Jesus. Paul said it well in 1 Corinthians. “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” That’s easy to say, but it’s a bit harder to live out.

So, here are 5 ways you can be living “missionally,” adapted from Jonathan Dodson’s work.

1. Eat with people who aren’t Christians. Be a friend to them. You know that friend you used to work with, that you still keep in touch with over Facebook? Make it a point to go eat with him or her periodically.

2. Be a regular. Try to go to the same Starbucks every time you want a latte. If you eat out often, have a restaurant that you go to often. (and in both cases, tip generously!) Try to get your gas at the same gas station. When you do visit the same places often, get to know the people who work there. Ask how they’re doing, and smile and be kind! Be a friend to the waiters and baristas.

3. Find a hobby you can enjoy with non-Christians. Motorcycles, bowling, fishing, running marathons (ok, maybe just a 5k), knitting, crocheting, going to the gym, etc. The possibilities here are endless. What can you do that puts you around other people with a common interest? When you get there, be a friend.

4. Be a friend at work. Ask questions to your co-workers. How are they doing? Be concerned when one of their children is sick. Be interested in their life. Be a friend.

5. Be the kind of neighbor you’d like to have. What can you do that your neighbor needs? Maybe you could do yardwork for your elderly neighbor. Maybe that young couple next door could use your help getting their car to work. Maybe you should invite them over for dinner. In short, be a friend.

So really, they key to missional living is just this: be a friend. That’s really not that hard. That’s something you can do today.

But don’t be a friend for the sake of being a friend, be a friend for Jesus’ sake. Remember what Paul said, “all to the glory of God.” Talk openly and honestly to your non-Christian friends.

Talk to them about Jesus. You don’t have to bring up the Gospel every single time, but when it comes up, don’t be ashamed! Talk about it! In natural conversation, people talk about what they like. If you’ve been saved by Jesus, he’s going to come up in conversation!

Be a friend, and talk to your friends about Jesus. That’s not too hard or intimidating. Who can you be a friend to before you go to bed tonight?

James tells us that pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is to visit orphans and widows in their affliction. At Journey Church, we want to participate in this physical side of Jesus’ work. That’s why we’ve got some upcoming work in Source Sable, Haiti. There will be more to come on this later, but here’s what you need to know:

1. Source Sable has several orphans without homes.

2. We want to give them a place to live.

A small team will be going in August to shoot footage of the need for an orphanage in Source Sable, but for now, check out this video, made by Indiana Southern Baptists, of the needs of Haiti in general.
