Liturgy Week of 1/8/2017

Journey Worship Liturgy

Welcome & Call To Worship: Joel

-Please stand and join me in our call to worship from Ps 31:21–24:
Blessed be the LORD,

for he has wondrously shown his steadfast love to me when I was in a besieged city.

I had said in my alarm,

“I am cut off from your sight.”

But you heard the voice of my pleas for mercy when I cried to you for help.
Love the LORD, all you his saints!

The LORD preserves the faithful but abundantly repays the one who acts in pride.

Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the LORD!
-Please join me in singing praise to God who preserves those who are faithful to Him.

Song: All Creatures

Confession / Good News / Greeting: Timothy

-Every week we like to take a moment to confess our sins and be reminded of the good news of salvation in Jesus Christ.

-In the story of Stephen which we have heard the past few weeks, the Jews are most of all indicted for their hardness of heart, rejecting Jesus in spite of the testimony of Scripture.

-Their false accusation against Stephen became the accusation against themselves.

-We too must make sure that we are not closing our ears to Scripture and rejecting God’s rule in our lives. Hear the warning of Ro 2:1–5:
Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For, in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself because you, the judge, practice the very same things. We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.
-God is patient so that we will turn to Him. Let’s take time now in prayer to confess any sin that we have failed to confess.

– While sin brings condemnation, for those who are in Christ we have assurance the good news of forgiveness of sin through faith in the death and resurrection of Christ.

-Please stand and confess our faith together by reading the Apostle’s Creed, a historic confession of our belief.

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit

and born of the virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;.

The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended to heaven

and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.

From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the universal church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

-In this assurance, let us greet one another in the name of Christ.

Giving & Prayer for Another Church: Dennis

-At Journey Church we like to celebrate that we have the opportunity to give our tithes and offerings not out of a sense of obligation, but in the freedom of worship, knowing that we are only returning a small part of the gifts that God has given us. We do this to show that we trust in God rather than in money.

-As we pray for the offering, we also want to lift up a sister church: Redeeming Vine BC, Pastor Todd Wells. Please pray:

-Better manage our finances.

-Evangelistic efforts around Greenville

-Jason, co-pastor, beginning a new sermon series.

-Todd taking a brief sabbatical for planning

-Todd in leading children to Christ and to grow as disciples.

Sermon: Dennis – Acts 7:54 – 8:1. “Stephen – A Believers Death for God’s Glory

Communion: Jeff

Song of Response: Jesus is Better

Sending Song: Glory Awaits

-Receive the benediction from Ps 37.

Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers!

For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb.

Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.

Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act.

He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.

Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!

The salvation of the righteous is from the LORD;  he is their stronghold in the time of trouble.

The LORD helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him.

-Journey Church, go in confidence that God will uphold those who take refuge in Him!
